Credit unions are different from big banks and other financial institutions in many important ways.
First and foremost, we aren’t here to profit off of you. We only exist to serve our members. We do not issue stock or pay dividends to outside stockholders. Instead, all of our earnings are returned to our members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest on deposits, and lower fees. Also, we pay taxes- payroll taxes, sales taxes, and property taxes. However, we are exempt from federal income taxes because all the money we make is reinvested back into our members.
Credit unions are an economic democracy. Every member of our credit union has equal ownership and one vote- no matter how high or low your account balance. Every customer we have is both a member and an owner. Alongside that, the board members are all credit union members- just like you. They focus on the real issues you face, and they are all elected by you.
